Overview.

Spire Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest independent hospital groups, appointed eEnergy to deliver a national solar PV rollout across its estate. The goal: reduce carbon emissions and energy costs without disrupting day-to-day clinical operations.

Scope of works.

  • 41 hospital sites across England, Wales, and Scotland
  • 5,164.79 kWp of installed capacity (40 rooftop, 1 ground mount)
  • Contract value: £5.2 million
  • Programme duration: November 2023 – December 2025
  • Designed for maximum on-site consumption, minimum export
  • Delivered alongside other energy works (e.g. LED upgrades, roofing)

Live environment delivery.

Hospitals remained fully operational throughout. Works took place adjacent to theatres, imaging suites, and wards—all with public access. Success relied on:

  • Tailored system design: Based on structural assessments, load capacity, shading, and electrical limits
  • Collaborative planning: Close coordination with Spire estates, clinical teams, and third-party contractors
  • Out-of-hours working: Deployed to avoid disruption to patient care
  • Clear stakeholder engagement: Site-specific planning, shared programmes, and daily communication.

Risk, safety and compliance management.

·       Site-specific RAMS, DNO notifications, scaffold inspections, and isolations

·       Daily toolbox talks and public safety measures

·       All sites delivered with zero reportable incidents

Structured reporting and transparency

  • Weekly site reports issued to Spire, including:
  • Milestone progress and completion %
  • Risk and issue tracking
  • Photographic evidence and safety records
  • Transparent, proactive updates built trust and ensured clarity
  • Consistently positive feedback from Spire site teams

Measured Impact

  • 98.9% average self-consumption
  • 29.4% average site self-sufficiency
  • 2,800+ MWh/year generated
  • 600+ tonnes CO saved annually
  • Delivered on time, on budget, and without disruption

Conclusion.

This programme showcases eEnergy’s ability to deliver complex, multi-site solar projects safely and professionally in high-traffic, operational healthcare environments. With rigorous planning, clear reporting, and a collaborative approach, we delivered a scalable, future-ready solar solution for one of the UK’s most demanding sectors.
