Campbell College- dramatically reducing lighting  costs and carbon emissions

Established in 1894, Campbell College is one of the leading Boarding and Day Schools in Ireland. With a Junior School, Senior School and a thriving international Boarding department, it has a rich history of educating some of Northern Ireland’s leading business, sporting and political figures. Located in 100 acres of stunning woodland, the school caters for a wide range of academic and sporting activities and boasts an Old Cambellian community of over 10,000 across the world.

 The challenge

With a strong focus on environmental sustainability, including a very active student council, the College had a dual objective of reducing both energy and maintenance costs across their estate of 11 buildings.

Campbell College entered a robust review of their options when considering this lighting project. After engaging with multiple potential partners, eEnergy was the standout choice for the College as their lighting partner. This was due to their clear, concise detailed proposition and no upfront cost light-as-a-service solution, backed up by glowing recommendations from current clients.

eEnergy had certain protocols to overcome in delivering the project in a working school  environment:

  • The main campus building was listed, so all works had to be carried out with consideration to the history of the location.
  • Due to the history and age of the buildings, there were a number of bespoke fittings which had to be retrofitted in keeping with the look and feel of the various buildings.
  • With school and boarding areas open all year round, installation had to be carefully coordinated with the onsite facilities management team to ensure timely access and minimal disruption to the college’s operations.

The solution

The installation was carried out over 2 months in Summer 2023 and involved fitting over 3000 lighting points across the 11-building estate.

eEnergy’ s lighting specialists ensured that the design delivered more consistent, brighter lighting across the college estate including common areas, classrooms, washrooms and boarding areas.

Our electrical installation partners and project management team worked hand in hand with the maintenance management team to ensure minimal interruption to day-to-day school activities.

A “clean as we go” policy was adopted so each building could be signed off as completed and allowed for a smooth transition across the time period of the project.

Following completion of the project, the benefits of the LED lighting upgrade were circulated to the school community to engage them in the college’s Net Zero journey.

The results

  • Expected reduction in lighting costs of 63%
  • Reduction in CO2 emissions of 56 tonnes per annum, equivalent to planting 2,716 trees.
  • Reduction in annual energy consumption of 137,728 kWh

Conclusion

Through eEnergy’s comprehensive solution, Campbell College is taking great steps to reduce their energy costs. Over the 11 school buildings, they have already started to see a tangible decrease in energy costs which has put the college on a great footing in starting their journey to Net Zero.

Campbell College testimonial.

“Campbell College has a vast estate of 11 buildings spanning across 100 acres. The operating and maintenance costs of these buildings are considerable. The eEnergy ‘Light as a Service’ model offers the school a great deal of control over that expenditure, with a Capital free solution that is expected to reduce our lighting costs by over 60%. eEnergy provided a professional service from initial survey to onsite installation, adhering to a tight programme and upon completion provided the required electrical certs.”
